This week I made six round-trips to Stillwater so my favorite hockey goaltender could attend all-day training camp. While he was on the ice, I walked along the St. Croix river, hiked to a waterfall, climbed the 119 steps of Stillwater Stairs for a sweeping view of the historic downtown and lift bridge, and refueled with coffee and pastries.
Day one. I’m driving through a heavy rainstorm breakfasting on Cheetos when I realize my white jeans are the perfect canvas for Cheeto dust. No time for regrets. We pull up to the rink on time despite the water-logged highway. Let’s celebrate at the You and Me cafe! Espresso with maple, vanilla, cinnamon, and almond milk, anyone? The “before sunrise” drink was the perfect cozy mug on a rainy morning. The pecan bar was tender and delicious…maybe yesterday? Today it was a battleground for tooth versus day-old caramel. Worth the struggle. I floated out the door with the sugary-caffeine-based energy I needed to drive back home to bring my daughter to her summer job then back to Stillwater for post-camp pickup.
Day two comes with two tips. First, street parking is abundant and free. Drive a block or two above main street and you’re likely to park by a home oozing historic charm all the way to the curbside-hitching post. Second, sunshine feels extra warm by the brick buildings and extra bright by the river. Dress in layers and wear a sunhat or sunglasses (I needed both).
Stillwater is built on the bank of the St. Croix river, and that’s where I’m headed. This morning the river is still and sparkling brightly. I wore my San Diego hat and darkest shades to keep from squinting as I walked to the historic Lift Bridge. This thing is a 1000+ feet massive steel and cable construction from 1931 and it’s a car-free passage for bikers and walkers to cross between Minnesota and Wisconsin. There are lots of opportunities to stop and watch river traffic like paddle boats and fishing boats.
